Shethar Memorial Garden
Tacoma, Washington

Built in memory of a Weyerhauser Corporation senior executive, the Shethar Memorial is a small, natural garden and a reflective gathering place. Large boulders and stone pavers were brought to the site to create the framework of the garden. A small fountain was designed to weep out of fissures in the rock and drain into a narrow stream bed at the edge of the garden. A rough hewn timber set within the garden provides seating adjacent to the fountain. Sited into a stand of mature douglas firs, the garden is landscaped with native salal and blends into the lush understory plantings.

Completed by Stephen Wheeler while with the SWA Group in Sausalito, California, the project received a Professional Award from the Central California Chapter of the ASLA in 1990. It was also published in Modern Landscape Architecture, Redefining the Garden, in 1991.
